There are various methods that social psychologists use to gain insight into questions posed in the field. The first to be discussed is systematic observation which is the opposite of people watching so to speak. This type of observation involves carefully measuring a certain type of behavior in a group of people. An example of this would be a researcher going to various settings such as a mall, a restaurant, or on a college campus to record how often two people have intimate contact with another person. Another method is naturalistic observation. This observation takes place in a natural setting and no particular behavior is being observed. Everything is being recorded and not interfering with the setting is key. This can be quite painful for the researchers who is annotating everything. Sometimes this method can be dull and little things can go unnoticed. While this method may be difficult and unpleasant, it is important in further explanation of peoples emotions and behavior. Another method is the survey method. Surveys are used for many purposes to include simple questions like what is your favorite color to complex questions such as legalizing marijuana and abortion. Surveys come with many advantages such as anonymity, world wide answers can be collected, and accessibility is made simple since surveys can be completed through social media. From here we move on to the correlation method. This method shows how different variables are affected by each other. Not many social psychologists prefer this method due to the results often being inconclusive in regards to the cause and effect relationship. The last method to be discussed is the experimental method. This method is where independent and dependent variables come into play. One variable is changed and evidence is collected. This method often utilizes controlled variables and those are ones that stay the same in every experiment (Branscombe & Baron, 2017). The best example of this would be the Bobo Doll Experiment conducted by Albert Bandura.Empirical research gathers data by experimentation or direct observation. There are two methods to gather said data and those are qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research is usually done early on in an experiment. Evidence is often collected by using ones senses. Quantitative research often involves numbers and statistical methods to interrupt those numbers (Bradford, 2017). In regards to which research method is the best, it would depend on the facts surrounding that experiment. Some research methods do not work with certain fields of research. Errors can occur in all methods of research, so I would say whatever method that can be utilized with the least errors is the best. No method is better than another, just different in detail. My go to method is a survey, but liked I said it depends on what evidence/data is being collected and the size of the population in question.Thank you.ReferencesBradford, A. (2017, July 27).
