Sociological Imagination: Public Issue vs Private TroubleSamuel was born and raised in a neighborhood in which 80% of the residents lived below the official poverty line. The neighborhood schools were, not surprisingly, underfunded. For both the high school and elementary school, rather than having textbooks for the students, the school teachers had photocopied worksheets, many of which were outdated. Many of the teachers were inexperienced educators, averaging only 3-5 years of teaching experience. Unfortunately, many of the newer teachers were under pressure to focus on testing rather than teaching. This meant very little time spent on Social Studies and History. The time that was spent on these topics, was very general and in large part left out the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities. Sam, who is Native American, found this to be troubling, as his experiences and the experiences of his ancestors were rarely discussed in any context. The neighborhood in which Sams family lived was categorized as an official food desert, or an area that has little access to grocery stores that carry fresh meat and produce, but are often serviced by fast food chains or convenience stores. Living in this area meant that some days, Sam and his class mates went to school hungry or having eaten only junk food and sweets, which were cheaper than traveling for healthier choices. The family could not afford to live in a better area of town. Both of Sams parents were born and raised in the same community and had few opportunities. Because of the education system, few members of the community were able to attend college and few had jobs that paid above minimum wage. Sams father felt a great deal of pressure to provide for the family, but had struggles related to his lack of education and lack of opportunities within the community. As a result, Sams home life was tumultuous. He witnessed his parents arguing over finances frequently; arguments that sometimes became physical. By the time Sam was a freshman in high school, he began staying out later to avoid conflict at home. However, because he stayed out late, he had difficulty paying attention in class and was often late. Eventually, Sam stopped attending high school and dropped out by the spring of his freshman year. Using the Sociological Imagination, explain Sams decision to drop out as a Private Trouble and as a Structural Issue.
Because of his history, family background and what William J. Wilson refers to as neighborhood effects, Sams life chances and choices might be limited. If Sam resorts to criminal activity, explain how this criminal activity may be explained as a Private Trouble and as a Structural Issue.
