Assignment 1: Historical Perspective of Biomedical Instrumentation
(Instrumentation Option)
This assignment has 3 major objectives:
To develop your skills in locating and correctly citing reference material from key journals in Biomedical Instrumentation
To provide an historical perspective of some aspect of Biomedical Instrumentation
To encourage reflection on the impact of engineering on society
What you should do.
Choose a particular topic area (disease/disability/injury) that is of interest to you.
Locate at least 2 textbooks in which there are sections that describe the topic in terms of causes, physiological basis, diagnosis and treatment.
Read the relevant sections of these textbooks to obtain a broad understanding of the topic.
Based on this reading and your interests, select to further examine the instrumentation involved in either the diagnosis or treatment related to the topic. (only one of these is to be covered in the report)
Locate and photocopy at least 1 Journal article more than 15 years old
(before 2001) that discusses what were then considered “current techniques” in your selection from step 4.
Locate and photocopy at least 1 Journal article less than 3 years old (from 2013) that discusses the present techniques.
Read these Journal articles (and others if necessary) and analyse them in relation to the following questions.
Physiological basis
Have there been changes in the physiological basis of the diagnosis or the treatment and why?
Advances in technology
What “engineering advances” have occurred which have contributed to the changes in instrumentation used?
Cost effectiveness of the new technology
How effective have these advances been in improving either diagnosis or treatment?
Is the new technology cheaper or more expensive?
Benefits to society
Who have been the primary beneficiaries and what has been the impact on society?
What you should hand in
A hard copy report should be handed in at the time identified in the subject guide. It must contain the usual cover page “Declaration of Originality” as provided by the Faculty and should have the structure indicated below.
Biomedical Instrumentation and Applications
A soft copy of the assignment (do not submit the 2 articles chosen) to Turnitin (see the link on UTSOnline) at the same time as submission of the hardcopy. These will be checked for plagiarism. There should be no difference between the hard and soft copies submitted. (except for the 2 articles which do not need to be submitted electronically)
TITLE: “Historical Perspectives of the (diagnosis or treatment – you will have chosen one of these) of (your topic) “
Section 1 Introduction: A brief description of the causes, physiological basis, diagnosis and treatment of the topic chosen. (approx 2 pages)
Section 2 Analysis and Discussion: Using the 4 headings
provided above in step 7, answer the questions related to each heading using the information presented in the 2 Journal articles chosen and other sources as needed (approx 4 pages).
References: A list of references cited in the assignment. Correct referencing technique must be used throughout the report. All referencing (including in text referencing and the reference list) must use the Harvard System of referencing. Details of this system are available from the BELL website at UTS. Bell – Referencing Guide. Students who do not use the Harvard System or do not reference their work correctly will be required to resubmit the assignment with a maximum mark of 50%
Appendix: A photocopy of the 2 Journal articles that form the basis of your discussion. You should ensure that the articles that you choose relate to a significant amount of your discussion.
Plagiarism
In this assignment, you must be careful to acknowledge the original author(s) of the ideas, facts, results, etc to which you refer. Acknowledgement must be made for every idea, concept, model, quote, etc within the written work at the point where it occurs, and be cross-referenced back to the list of references at the end of the work. Deliberate plagiarism (the attempt to pass off somebody else’s work as one’s own) is academic fraud because the student is attempting to deceive the marker.
Information on what constitutes plagiarism and how to avoid it is available in the Coursework Assessment Policy and Procedures Manual (Section 4.4) from the following site. https://www.gsu.uts.edu.au/policies/papers/courseworkassessmentoct05.pdf
