TASK DESCRIPTION: Using an approved sports event or sub component of your choice, you are required in groups (ideally of 4) to act as the management planning team for this event. You will produce a detailed project management plan that will be structured into three sections, namely a project proposal, a detailed project management plan, and a justification section.

 

LEARNING RESOURCES: 

  • To strengthen your analysis of your sport event, it is essential that you refer to the concepts, case studies and materials in the e-texts, especially Parent & Smith-Swan (2013). Managing major sports events: Theory and practice. 
  • The websites, and other materials available from your chosen sport event, will be a good starting point for your inquiry. 
  • MS Project software. This is essential for your discussion of the “critical path” for the project management of your sport event, and for the project management “printouts” (see p. 2 below). 

Section 1 – Event description and project proposal (5 marks).  (300 words)

The project proposal section will: a. Clearly and concisely describe the nature and scope of the event; Note: for the description of the nature and scope of the event, groups may wish to refer to the following event elements:

  • Name and Venue(s)/location of the event; Name and location of the organisation managing the event; Date of the event; Event purpose; Participants; Pricing; Bidding (if applicable); key personnel in the management structure; Media partners; Key stakeholders & Key sponsors. a.
  • Identify S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measureable, achievable, realistic & time bound) objectives that address project quality, resource and time components.

Section 2 – Project Plan (20 marks). Section 2 presents the means to achieve these objectives, where a coherent project management plan will be submitted.
