Methodology part Methodology Relevant scholarly sources regarding dental biofilm were located by searching medical databases for primary research material. A total of 13 electronic databases were searched for articles and other scholarly sources originating from the year 2009 up till the present moment (2015), with the most of publications obtained primarily from the following databases: MEDLINE, PubMed, and The Cochrane Library. Only sources published between the years 2009 and 2015 were taken into account for the purposes of this review so as to ensure all the information considered is in line with current discoveries and knowledge in the field. So as to make sure that any relevant study is included in the present review, keywords used in the search were kept broader and not too specific, so as to allow us to retrieve as many useful publications as possible. These keywords were represented by “dental”, plus “biofilm”. The search was restricted to the English language, although articles written by foreign authors or articles that were originally written in a different language were also taken into account for the purpose of the review, as long as there was an English version of the publication available. Lastly, a comprehensive research was performed through the use of Internet resources, namely Google Scholar, for the location of additional research material to help with the writing of the review. The next step of the literature review involved a detailed evaluation of the publications retrieved through the above mentioned methodology so as to decide which would be suitable for the purposes of this review. Any paper in which dental biofilm was insufficiently covered or represented a more minor variable of the research was excluded on the grounds that it could not contribute this review with valuable information. Papers that did not make any reference to actual studies or interventions with results that could be properly evaluated were also discarded from the review. Other exclusion criteria included articles that were older than 2009 and papers written in any other language apart from English. This inclusion and exclusion criteria left us with a total of 19 scholarly sources, which were then examined for main themes, discussed in the following subsection.
