CHE101_1_2 – The lymphatic system

The lymphatic system (Links to an external site.) functions like an internal system of pipes, moving andfiltering fluids in the body to remove excess proteins and water, and eliminating contaminants. Thissystem plays an important role in keeping our immune system in tact, because if contaminants fromfood, from injuries like cuts and scrapes, or from the air around us were to stay in our bodies, we wouldbecome very sick and likely perish quickly. Instead, the lymphatic system, made up of a series oflymphatic vessels, works incessantly to filter our blood so that we can maintain a defense against theseforeign bodies and excess substances. This system also helps support the cardiovascular system becauseit is responsible for returning fluids that are leaked from blood vessels back to the blood stream. If the lymphatic system is not functioning properly, it results in swelling of the arms, legs, or other partsof the body. The lymphatic vessels are not filtering excess fluids back into the blood stream, leavingthese fluids gathered at certain spots within the body. This condition is known as lymphedema.Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial tissue that causes swelling, mostoften in the arms and/or legs, and occasionally in other parts of the body. Lymphedema can developwhen lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired, or when lymph vessels are damaged or lymph nodesremoved. The lymphatic organs include:Lymph nodes, (Links to an external site.)Tonsils, (Links to an external site.)Spleen (Links to an external site.)Thymus (Links to an external site.)Prompt:When a person gets sick from bacteria or viruses the lymphatic system plays an important role in thehealing of the body.
