A 20 year old woman was hospitalised for a simple operation on her back. The operation was done successfully and the woman was healing gradually. However just before she leaves the hospital she noticed a red, sore bump at her back which grew to become a pus producing lesion. A specimen was taken from the lesion, examined microscopically, and cultured on microbiological media. The results of both microscopy and culture reavealed a Gram positive cocci that was catalase negative and was able to hydrolyse glycoside aesculin to aesculetin and glucose in presence of bile. The woman was traeted with antibiotics, her condition improved and she was released from the hospital. On an attempt to find out the origin of infection all door handles, all toilet taps, and all table tops in the ward were swabbed and cultured. The same microorganism was isolated from 0 out of 10 toilet taps, 10 out of 20 door handles, and 7 out of 15 table tops.
