Guidelines to support the development of your work
PART 1: RESEARCH PAPER
Using the template provided, you are to provide a paper that examines
the concept of “Competing Through
Operations” in the context of the target market. You should make use of
secondary data (academic papers, trade
magazines, company reports and Internet resources) in the production of
this paper.
You paper should include
· An introduction explaining the nature of the research, including a
very brief discussion on the methods that
you will use to compile your report.
· A concise literature review on the concept of competing through
operations.
· The majority of your effort (and words) should be spent on the main
body of the research. This should
provide an overview of the main companies in the market, and a detailed
appraisal of how they compete
with each other through their operations. You should support this
appraisal with suitable examples, and
reference them accordingly. To tackle this part of the report it may be
helpful to critique the companies
based on the five operations performance objectives (cost, quality,
speed, dependability, flexibility).
· A brief conclusion in which you summarize your findings, highlight
limitations, and provide directions for
further investigation.
Bookshop Dentist Florist Hotel
Grocery Store Restaurant Stationers Travel AgencyPART 2: PRESENTATION TO
COMPANY
Based on your findings from Part 1 you should propose an operations
strategy that would enable Company X to
compete with the existing firms. You should prepare a short presentation
for the management of Company X
explaining your suggested strategy.
As you will not be verbally delivering the presentation, you should also
include brief notes (using the PowerPoint
notes feature) to support your presentation. These notes should
succinctly explain each slide for the audience and
should not simply be a repetition of the slide content. You may also use
the notes section to state any assumptions
you are making about the scenario or the company involved.
It is recommended that you use PowerPoint software to produce your
presentation since this software is available
on Cardiff University library computers, and support can be readily
obtained from INSRV staff should you have any
technical queries. A short video is available in the Assignment folder
on Learning Central which explains the basic
method for constructing your PowerPoint presentation. You may use
alternative software packages if you prefer,
but please note that you will not be able to get any technical help with
these from Cardiff University staff.
Irrespective of the software package chosen you should ensure that your
printed presentation contains five slides
and accompanying notes similar to that indicated in the Learning Central
video.
Word Count
In this exercise you are encouraged to be succinct in the communication
of concepts using a maximum of 2,500
words:
· The paper may contain up to 1,500 words excluding data tables,
appendices, and references.
· The PowerPoint presentation should contain a title slide plus no more
than five slides.
· Whilst there is no word limit on the slide content, be selective with
your choice of words to ensure the
clearest presentation. In the notes section you will support the slides
with remarks of up to 1,000 words in
total.
Instructions for Submission
You are required to submit:
· One paper copy of your paper printed on A4 paper using the template
format provided.
· One paper copy of your PowerPoint presentation printed on A4 paper
using the Notes Page printing option
(1 slide per page with text notes below). All slides must be clearly
numbered.
· One electronic version of your paper and presentation for submission
to plagiarism detection software.
Please ensure that you include a title page containing your name,
student number, email address, module name,
module number, lecturer name, and a word count for Part 1 and Part 2.
All documents must be securely held together using either staples or
spiral binding: there must be no loose sheets of
paper. Your submission should be properly referenced throughout using
the Cardiff Harvard style of referencing,
and a full list of references provided.

Mark Award Assessment Descriptor
80+ Distinction An outstanding piece of work, showing total mastery of
the subject matter, with a
highly developed and mature ability to analyse, synthesise and apply
knowledge
and concepts. All objectives of the set work are covered and the work is
free of
error with very high level of technical competence. There is evidence of
critical
reflection; and the work demonstrates originality of thought, and the
ability to
tackle questions and issues not previously encountered. Ideas are
expressed with
fluency. All intended learning outcomes are exceeded.
70-79 Distinction An excellent piece of work, showing a high degree of
mastery of the subject matter,
with a well-developed ability to analyse, synthesise and apply knowledge and
concepts. All major objectives of the set work are covered, and work is
free of all
but very minor errors, with a high level of technical competence. There
is evidence
of critical reflection, and of ability to tackle questions and issues
not previously
encountered. Ideas are expressed clearly. However the originality
required for a
80+ mark is absent. All intended learning outcomes are achieved and some are
exceeded.
60-69 Merit A good piece of work, showing a sound and thorough grasp of
the subject-matter,
though lacking the breadth and depth required for a distinction mark. A good
attempt at analysis, synthesis and application of knowledge and
concepts, but more
limited in scope than that required for a mark of 70+. Most objectives
of the work
set are covered. Work is generally technically competent, but there may
be a few
gaps leading to some errors. Some evidence of critical reflection, and
the ability to
make a reasonable attempt at tackling questions and issues not previously
encountered. Ideas are generally expressed with clarity, with some minor
exceptions. All intended learning outcomes are achieved.
50-59 Pass A fair piece of work, showing grasp of major elements of the
subject-matter but
possibly with some gaps or areas of confusion. Only the basic
requirements of the
work are covered. The attempt at analysis, synthesis and application of
knowledge
and concepts is superficial, with a heavy reliance on course materials.
Work may
contain some errors, and technical competence is at a routine level
only. Ability to
tackle questions and issues not previously encountered is limited.
Little critical
reflection. Some confusion and immaturity in expression of ideas. Most
intended
learning outcomes are achieved.
40-49 Fail Not of a passable level for a postgraduate programme. A poor
piece of work,
showing some familiarity with the subject matter, but with major gaps
and serious
misconceptions. Only some of the basic requirements of the work set are
achieved.
Little or no attempt at analysis, synthesis or application of knowledge,
and a low
level of technical competence, with many errors. Difficulty in beginning
to address
questions and issues not previously encountered.
Below
40
Fail Work not of passable standard, with serious gaps in knowledge of
the subject
matter, and many areas of confusion. Few or none of the basic
requirements of the
work set are achieved, and there is an inability to apply knowledge.
Technical
competence is poor, with many serious errors. The level of expression and
structure is very inadequate. Few intended learning outcomes are achieved.
