Purpose: This final project is designed to enable you to apply the theories and concepts we learned about leadership in current multinational business. You may also look at leaders of the “green” movement in business, which are as eco-oriented new emerging businesses. You may discuss other options with me.
Students can select any type of leader for whom there is sufficient information to provide a good analysis of leadership processes and outcomes.
The student should read at least six separate sources (biographies and articles) that provide enough detail to identify specific traits and skills, behaviors, influence processes, and relevant aspects of the situation. The most useful type of source is a biographical account of the leader’s activities and accomplishments. Other relevant sources may include: an autobiographical account or memoirs written by the leader, a detailed, analytical article written by someone besides the leader, filmed biographies or documentaries about the leader, and dramatized accounts of significant events involving the leader. All sources should be clearly cited in the paper.
A minimum requirement of the paper is to identify specific behaviors and refer to relevant theories to explain why the behaviors were appropriate or inappropriate in the situation faced by the leader. Even better is to identify reasons why the leader was successful enough to become famous. Both strengths and weaknesses of each leader should be identified. Issues of ethical leadership should be considered as well. It is helpful to use quotes and detailed descriptions of selected incidents to support conclusions about the leader’s behavior and influence on followers. The source for any quotes or factual details should be clearly cited.
Procedure: It is important to select a well-known leader of a business so that you have sufficient resource and background information on the leader. You are to select at least six difference sources of information (articles, books, magazines, etc.) in either hard copy or online sources.
Requirements: It is suggested that you select one important “event” or challenge which put the leader in the headlines and evaluate the leader in response to that specific situation. Your analysis is to be based upon contemporary modes of leadership that look at the leader from the three perspectives: leader, followers, and the external environment.
You need to have an introduction of related literature on leader ship and motivation. (minimum of two pages).
Your body of discussion includes the following:
External Environment & Strategic Challenge:
 Analyze the leadership challenges encountered by the selected leader. What was the leader trying to do? And how was she/he trying to do it?

 Evaluate the external challenges and pressures the leader faced and tried to address.
Strategic Vision:

 Explain the leader’s vision and mission for this situation?

 How successful was she/he in achieving their vision and desired outcome?
The Leader:

 Describe the leadership style: transformation, or transactional or charismatic?

 Explain the benefits and disadvantages of such style.

 How do people view the style of the leader?

 Apply a theory that could be most appropriate with the leader’s approach to
different situations.
Leading Others:

 Analyze the nature of influence and authority the leader used.

 How effective was this?

 How appropriate was this? Why?
Organization / Culture:

 Evaluate the organizational culture and structure the leader belongs.

 How does it relate to the leader’s style and influence?

 Benefits and disadvantages of this culture and structure.
Insights, Summary, Conclusions:

 Express the most important insights you gained about leadership from this research.
