Role of Level 3 BTEC National Diploma/Extended Diploma in Health Studies:

 

Work related activities include: Work shadowing, in which an individual student is assigned to ‘shadow’ an individual employee going about his or her normal activities, allowing close observation of jobs which for reasons of complexity, safety or security cannot be actively undertaken by the student.

 

  • It is expected that learners will in the main only be able to observe practice.
  • Gain insight into the health or social care workplace.
  • Making conversation with service users
  • Observing routines and activities carried out by health or care workers and identifying regular patterns and deviations from these.
  • Supporting workers to carry out daily routines and activities.
  • Supporting workers in providing care that you cannot deliver yourself.
  • Distributing meals or refreshments to service users(not feeding unless explicit consent is given)
  • Seeking assistance/advice when you judge a situation to be beyond your experience or level of responsibility.
  • Preparing/laying out materials and equipment
  • Assisting individual service users to participate in group activities.
  • Clearing up after activities
  • Passing on messages within the team
  • Reporting events and observations you witness to your supervisor, especially if you think staff may not be aware of the full details of the situation
  • Using the specialist literature that is available in each placement in order to carry out research for your studies.
  • Reflect on their skills and knowledge gained.
  • Students should complete a diary or placement log that describes their daily activities/observations.
  • The diary/log should include information about the health or social care setting, example the type/role of the organisation, health and safety procedures and staffing provision.
  • Student should have a designated placement supervisor within the workplace.
  • Designated college tutor to overview the placement.
  • Students will be visited on at least one occasion during the period of work experience.
  • At the end of the placement a brief report should be supplied from the placement supervisor.
  • Student to complete a minimum of 30hours within the setting and placement supervisor to sign timesheet.

 

Students will have the following documentation:

  1. Diary/log book
  2. Witness/observation statements
  3. Time sheets
