The Code of Fair Information Practices (http://www.ftc.gov/reports/privacy-online-fair-information-practices-electronic-marketplace-federal-trade-commission) applies only to government databases. Consider the concept of consumer privacy and data protection.
There is a potential conflict of interest between the consumers who
want to protect their data, and the businesses who want to use
consumers’ data for profit – whether by selling that information, or
using it to direct advertising activities. Explain the Fair Information Practices Act. Compare and contrast the Code of Fair Information Practices with the private sector’s use of information.
Is the private sector better at self-policing than the government, or
should the government’s rules be extended to include private databases?
