The Environment – Are Airlines Off The Hook?
After many years of disagreement and procrastination, United Nations delegates at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) summit in Montreal on 6 October 2016 agreed on a set of measures designed to curb the growth of aviation emissions.
Leading industry experts hailed the agreement as ‘an historic moment’ and ‘an unprecedented agreement’. However, critics argue that the Montreal delegates have not gone far enough.
You have been tasked with providing a clear brief to the senior management of an airline of your choice on the situation. Specifically, you should:
1. Provide a clear picture of the Montreal agreement, and consider the opportunities and pitfalls.
2. Explain the implications of the agreement in practical terms on the day-to-day activities of your chosen airline.
3. Recommend a strategic direction that your chosen airline might follow in order to comply with the agreement and ensure that the company is perceived as being environmentally responsible.
