1. Language is one of the most powerful emblems of social behaviour. Describe how people manage their language relative to their cultural backgrounds, their gender, and their goals for interaction. Provide examples that help illustrate the various situations.
2. The term reframing is used to describe the notion of reinterpreting the meaning of a previous sentence or statement. Frame analysis is a type of discourse analysis that asks, “What activity were the speakers engaged in when they made these statements?” “What did they think they were doing by talking in this manner at that particular time?” Think about how difficult it can be to make sense of what you are hearing or reading, when you don’t know who is speaking or what the general topic is. Select a newspaper article, a radio story, or a random conversation and produce a discourse analysis of the event. Remember to discuss items such as turn taking, the use of speech markers such as “uh,” and Hymes’ social speech events (see the Unit 10 Commentary in your Study Guide).
